On Tuesday 28th June, pupils from Years 5 and 6 took part in the MYG Athletics at Medway Park along with 50 other schools. Pupils had to take part in four events each; one running, throwing, jumping and relay event each. The different events were; long jump, triple jump, vertical jump, speed bounce, cricket ball throw, ball push, javelin, hammer, mini marathon, 60m sprint, 100m sprint and the 200m.
Each event featured a boy and girl from each school combining their individual score to create an overall school score, which was then put in to a league table of results. Oliver Horne and Lilly Howard featured in the first event of the day in the mini marathon, with Lilly finishing 24th and Oliver finishing 1st. Next followed the field events, in which the St Andrew’s team did a brilliant job throughout. We finished 10th in the cricket ball throw, 3rd in the javelin, 19th in the ball push, 8th in the hammer, 40th in the long jump, 22nd in the speed bounce, 5th in the triple jump and 5th in the vertical jump. These high finishes meant that we went in to the afternoon’s track events with high hopes of finishing in the top 10 at the end of the day.
The track events went well for the St Andrew’s teams, with some fast times being ran in all of the events. When the results were announced, the St Andrew’s team finished in an incredible 4th position! The team should be extremely proud of how they performed throughout the day, with some amazing performances from the whole team. St Andrew’s managed to win four gold medals; Oliver Horne in the mini Marathon and Isabella Burrows in the hammer, triple jump and 200m. A special mention to Lilly Howard who filled in at the last minute due to an ill team member, well done!
