On Wednesday 29th June, pupils from year 6 took part in the Basketball Night of Champions at Medway Park. The team finished in 4th position in the Mini Youth Games so hopes were high for a good performance.
Our first game was against St Mary’s Island, last year’s overall winners. St Andrew’s started slowly, finding themselves 4 – 1 down at half time. The second half was a different story, with St Andrew’s dominating the game, scoring 9 points and only conceding the 1 to win the game 10 – 5. This excellent performance put us in to the semi-final against Balfour.
Balfour were a very tough opponent, playing some excellent basketball from the start. Despite the St Andrew’s team trying hard to break down their defence, Balfour won the game 7-0.
This put us in to the 3rd/4th place play-off against Hempsted. The game was very tight to begin with, but Hempsted managed to pull away with some excellent shooting to win the game 5 – 2.
The St Andrew’s team finished in 4th position, an excellent end to the Mini Youth Games series. Throughout the series of 10 events, schools have been collecting points depending on their position in each event and placed in to a league table. Out of the 56 schools that have taken part in the Mini Youth Games series, St Andrew’s finished in 8th position, which is an excellent achievement. All of the pupils that participated in a Mini Youth Games event should be very proud of their performances.
