On Thursday 3rd November St Andrew’s entered the Mini Youth Games hockey competition. The team of 8 was selected from a squad of children who had attended training sessions at Anchorian’s Hockey Club and was made up of Year 5 and 6 pupils.
We started extremely well, beating Kingfisher 5-0, St. Thomas Moore 7-1 and St. Augustine of Canterbury 4-0 in our first three games. Our next games were against the Academy of Woodlands who beat us 2-0 and St Mary’s Island who beat us 3-1 and went on to win the competition. We were not disheartened by our defeats as we put in great performances, but were outplayed by better teams and also a little unlucky with some umpiring decisions. We bounced back to winning ways quickly - our next opponents were Featherby who we beat 2-1, Meredale who we beat 3-2 and Gordon who we beat 2-0.
Our players worked really hard in all of their matches and showed excellent skills, decision making and teamwork to achieve some fantastic results in the competition. We were delighted to finish 8th out of 44 schools (the highest position we have ever achieved in hockey) and earn a place at the Mini Youth Games Night of Champions! Well done Cheyne, Lilly, Jake, Connor, Gabriella, Ethan, Suna and Naveen!
